For decades most real estate in China has been ground up development. Older buildings were almost always torn down for new glass facades. So when we found ourselves staring down an enormous century old industrial steel facility in Beijing, we were facing a new challenge. How do we turn this colossal collection of warehouses into a modern and vibrant space for creative office and community? We partnered with Shougang Group Co., Ltd., a Chinese state-owned-enterprise, to begin this landmark urban regeneration case – the largest in the world.

Repurposed for the next generation

At the project, Chang’An Mills, we created the new out of the old. We helped to realize a different perspective and experience on this built environment. Our design pays respect to historical relics, while stripping away the dirt and pollution to create a vivid place where customers want to work and shop.

To add to the public profile, Chang’An Mills is at the site of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics Big Air games. In addition to the state-of-the-art office and retail spaces, the park is hosting some of the competitions, accelerating the already rapid growth in the area. Chang’An Mills is a prime example of how a public and private partnership can revitalize a neighborhood and bring accessibility to the community.
