Overview
The Hudson Yards provides a singular opportunity to design an entire community with the latest thinking in sustainable design. Tishman Speyer’s plan will achieve a minimum certification of LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, representing one of the most significant commitments to green development in the United States.Tishman Speyer is a worldwide pioneer of green buildings. In New York City alone, Tishman Speyer has spearheaded the development of projects including the Hearst Tower and the new Citibank project in Long Island City, two of New York City’s first Gold-certified buildings. With an additional 3.5 million square feet under development in New York City that will be certified LEED Gold, Tishman Speyer is also building a number of sustainable developments around the nation and the world. Among these projects are the first LEED-certified high rise commercial project in San Francisco and projects in Brazil, Germany, India, and China. Tishman Speyer also applies its best practices in sustainable design principles across existing assets, including the landmark Rockefeller Center and its 2007 eco-friendly Rockefeller Center Tree, which is lit by energy efficient LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting and will be recycled as green lumber.
Green Roofs and Water Recycling – Used throughout the development to reduce the heat island effect, water demand, and stormwater runoff
Energy Efficient Buildings – Project will feature some of the most energy-efficient buildings ever constructed in New York City, critical to reducing demand for new electrical generation
Efficient Building Façades – Combining floor-to-ceiling glass with state-of-the-art energy saving coatings to maximize daylighting and views while minimizing solar heat gain, transmissive heating, and cooling losses
Cogeneration – We are exploring the use of a cogeneration system as part of the complex, allowing entire buildings or parts thereof to be “off the grid” – independently generating their own power
Recycled Materials – Building design will maximize the use of recycled content and materials procured locally. All wood used in the project will be harvested according to sustainable practices, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council
Innovative Workplace Strategies – Utilizing design elements such as underfloor air and extra-high ceilings will create healthier, more pleasant interiors and allow building occupants to reduce energy use
Hudson River Nature Center – Proposal to partner with a non-profit organization to build an environmental center that will celebrate the habitat and biodiversity of the river, for students, residents, and visitors to learn about one of New York’s greatest natural treasures
